That’s a Whole Lot of Climbing

Ironman Lake Placid was on TV the other day.  I was dying to see it, in hopes of gleaming some kind of insight into what to expect.  But the only bit I really took away was this:

The elevation gain on the IMLP bike course is equivalent to climbing the Empire State building SEVEN times.  Holy balls.  I’ve seen the numbers before.  But to have it put in those kinds of terms… wow. And that’s just the bike!  The run is no cakewalk either!

265 Days - First Week of Training

I got the first month of my training plan from Coach Jorge over the weekend.  The first few weeks are a little less scary then I expected, which is a nice surprise.  It’s all ‘easy’ prep and base work for a while.  Woohoo!  I guess I should have known that I wouldn’t be thrown into a schedule I couldn’t handle right now… but it’s nice to see that confirmed on paper (or the internet - trainingpeaks.com to be exact).

And today, I officially began my training with a super easy 35 minute run.  The next few weeks are going to be all about getting back into the routine and shaking the cobwebs off.  I’m psyched!  Focus in on building up my run, which is my weakest discipline, to 6 days a week.  Swim technique will be emphasized in the pool and cycling will be in maintenance mode for most of the winter.

Here’s a quick overview of week 1:

Mon: Run 35 min
Tue: Swim 1700 yds
Wed: Run 40 min
Thu: Swim 1500 yds
Fri: Off
Sat: Run 50 min
Sun: Bike 35 min

269 Days - Lactate Threshold Test Results

I finished the last of my pre-training tests last night. I know have a good idea of my lactate threshold for all three sports. The tests were all pretty similar… a 15 minute warmup, then a couple minutes of all out intervals to peg the heart rate followed by a hard 30 minute time trial. Since they’re pretty much all out empty-your-tank efforts, I was prescribed a few days of rest in between each one.

On the bike and run, I monitored my heart rate. On the swim, my pace. Now that I’m done, I have a pretty good idea of what my lactate thresholds are (aka anaerobic thresholds). I expect my numbers to change over the next few months as I work my way back into a structured training routine.

Swim LT: 1:59 / 100 yds
Bike LT: 162 bpm
Run LT: 179 bpm

With these finished, Coach Jorge (as he will now be known) can figure out my training zones and put together my plan. We’re supposed to go over it this weekend. I’m pretty excited to see what he’s going to have me doing.

I also put together the list of races I’m interested in doing before IMLP (letter in parenthesis is importance to me):

11/22 - Feaster 5k (C)
3/16/08 - New Bedford Half Marathon (B)
4/20/08 - Wrentham Duathlon (C)
5/11/08 - JCC Tri by the Sea Sprint (B)
6/8/08 - Mooseman Half Iron (B)
7/20/08 - Ironman Lake Placid (A)

Coach Jorge recommends a couple 10k’s in those cold months to keep me motivated throughout the winter, but I don’t see anything too interesting on the calendar yet. I’ll just have to wait and see what’s available.

It Begins

I know the blog has been lacking for the past month or so, but I’ve been taking a break.  A break from trianing and pretty much anything else that took any sort of effort.  And WOW did it feel good!  Well, for a while anyway.  I started feeling like a lazy slob at some point.  But that’s ok.  I needed it… bad.

I’m ready to get moving again.  And the ‘itch’ is coming at just the right time.  I spoke to my coach yesterday (Jorge from PBM Coaching ) about getting starting on the road to Ironman Lake Placid.  He gave me my first assignment.  We need to determine my functional threshold for each sport with a set of tests I’m supposed to complete over the next couple weeks.  Knowing this will help determine my training zones (based on heart rate or speed) so I know what kind of effort I should be putting out on easy, hard, or interval days.

And starting October 29, it all begins.

Jorge left me with these words: “Enjoy the next few weeks off, after that is GO time.”
