New Song: “Go Gadget, Go!”

A jazzy version of the Inspector Gadget theme song.  My old band, Tim the Pie, used to play a version of this, which is where the inspiration came from.  Apologies if it gets stuck in your head.

New Song: “Floating”

I’ve finished up a few new songs over the last month, which I’ll be posting over the next couple days. The first is a song called “Floating”. It’s more of an atmospheric interlude that briefly teases a song, written for my unborn son. I tried to convey a feeling of floating around in an amniotic sac with brief moments of activity that go away as quickly as they appear.

I’m also trying out a new media player for the site, so click the play button below to start the song and let me know if it gives you any trouble.

New Music

I updated the Music page with a few additional songs.

Guilty Spark
A Halo inspired trance tune that I finished the other day. This is actually a remix/mashup of two of my older songs… one incomplete and the other antiquated. While working on both, I noticed the potential for blending them. I think it turned out pretty good.

Download: Guilty Spark (mp3)

eight minutes till today becomes tomorrow
A subdued synthetic instrumental track to chill out to. I finished this one a while ago, but I’m just getting around to posting it.

The Eels - Now Harmful to Kids

This is VERY old news… but I just learned about it and had to share. During the 2000 campaign, George Bush singled out one of my favorite bands as putting out inappropriate music that was marketed to kids.

Specifically, he was talking about the album “Daisies of the Galaxy” by The Eels.

The funny part is that The Eels are one of the most harmless bands I’ve ever heard. The frontman and songwriter, ‘E’, has a great sense of irony, and often pokes fun at the band’s innocence by writing beautiful songs with off-color (and incredibly honest) lyrics. Bush claimed the album was marketed to children because of it’s illustrated cover, but contained a song called “It’s a Motherfucker”.

First of all, including an illustration on the cover of an album does not mean it’s automatically marketed to children. Secondly, it’s obvious that nobody working for Bush actually listened to the song (or any other Eels song). The entire album is about E learning to love life again after his sister committed suicide and his mom died from a terminal illness. Put in context, the song is a real tearjerker:

“It’s a Motherfucker”

It’s a motherfucker
Being here without you
Thinking ’bout the good times
Thinking ’bout the bad
And I won’t ever be the same

It’s a motherfucker
Getting through a Sunday
Talking to the walls
Just me again
But I won’t ever be the same
I won’t ever be the same

It’s a motherfucker
How much I understand
The feeling that you need someone
To take you by the hand
And you won’t ever be the same
You won’t ever be the same

Anyway, they’re releasing a new 33 song album next month called “Blinking Lights and other revelations”. I’m really looking foward to it, since it’s being hailed as a return to the days of “Electro-Shock Blues.” There is a thoroughly informative press release here.

Remix in Your Face!

Yesterday, I submitted an entry to the “Three Notes and Runnin” contest. It’s actually not so much a contest as it is a demonstration of what can be created by sampling existing works. The task was to create a 30 second ’song’ from a two second sample of Funkadelic’s “Get off Your Ass and Jam.” The rules: manipulate the sample any way you want… but no other sounds are to be introduced.

I came up with a 30 second diddy called “Subtronic Recoil.” All the sounds in it came out of that 2 second, 3 note sample. I was stunned at what can be accomplished through sampling and I’m hoping to do some more in the future. “Check out my entry!

Go… listen…

I just about finished my new song tonight. It’s called “Fermentation” unless I decide to change it. But I still need to do one more final mixdown after hearing it on some different systems. It’s a downtempo dub track… made to be played as background music.

I think it’s sounded pretty good right now! Check it out…

New Music

I hung out with Chris Knott yesterday, and I was inspired to start making some more music. I’ve got a new song about 50% done and creativity is flowing.

Hopefully, I’ll get a music section up on the site soon.
